About The Actors Workout — Sydney Acting Studio, Screen Acting Classes, Showreel Production in Ultimo
A Studio For The Screen
The Actors Workout is a Sydney-based acting studio built around screen craft. We teach on-camera from day one, run a clear training pathway from foundation work through to industry-ready, and keep cohorts small so every actor gets real time in front of the lens.
Our programs are built around the screen — foundation intensives, ongoing weekly on-camera classes, and our flagship 1 Year Screen Acting Course combining screen craft with professional showreel production. Alongside the core pathway, we run regular masterclasses with leading stage and screen teachers.
Based in Ultimo, two minutes from Sydney Central Station, we work with actors at every level — from total beginners taking their first on-camera class, to working actors sharpening before auditions.
How We Teach
BUILT INSIDE THE INDUSTRY
Classes are led by people who are currently working in the industry.
Matt Levett brings over 20+ years of experience across film, television and stage, and the wider teaching team includes actors, directors and casting professionals working at a professional level, along with guest teachers.
The aim is to keep the work aligned with what’s actually happening professionally — both on screen and on stage.
CRAFT AND TECHNIQUE
The work starts with the fundamentals — presence, listening, and truthful response.
That carries across both screen and stage.
Alongside that, we focus on the technical side of screen acting — understanding the frame, continuity, and how performance translates on camera.
SMALL CLASSES, DIRECT FEEDBACK
Classes are kept small so everyone is working regularly.
You’ll spend time on camera and on the floor, with clear, direct feedback on the work.
For specialised workshops, class sizes may increase, but the structure of the work remains the same.
The Studio
The Actors Workout is built as a working creative space — somewhere you can settle in, take risks, and build community.
We run out of two large studio rooms, both used for class and rehearsal. It means the work doesn’t get interrupted — you’re not waiting around or constantly resetting. You’re moving, working, staying in it.
There’s also a breakout area and kitchen — somewhere to reset between scenes, connect, and stay immersed in the work. It’s a space people actually want to spend time in.
Meet Matt
Matt Levett founded The Actors Workout six years ago, after more than two decades working on screen and stage in Australia and the US. The studio has just moved into a new home in Ultimo — bigger rooms, better light, and a community that’s grown with it.
A WAAPA graduate, Matt’s screen credits include A Place to Call Home, The Devil’s Playground, Wolf Creek, Rescue Special Ops, Dance Academy, The Secret Daughter, Home and Away, Winners and Losers and Bed of Roses, alongside the indie features Sunset People, Drown and Misplaced, and the US feature Payback (Amazon Prime). Onstage, he played in Andrew Bovell’s Things I Know to Be True at Belvoir St Theatre. He’s a recipient of the AIF Heath Ledger Scholarship in Los Angeles (2015) and the NIDA Gloria Payten Fellowship (2019).
Before opening The Actors Workout, Matt spent years coaching and directing at NIDA, The Hub Studio, Screenwise, The Actors Centre and ATYP — working with actors at every stage of their careers.
He started his own studio to do it his way. A place built around small cohorts, passionate teachers, and a community of actors who take the work seriously. Somewhere to keep coming back to — to keep practising the craft, year after year. A room where you learn by doing, take risks without the fear of being wrong, and build confidence instead of having it stripped away. Where actors are empowered to create their own work, learn the craft of filmmaking, and stop waiting for permission. No BS. No ego. Just the love of doing the work, and the people you do it with.
